Omayra Sánchez Garzón (August 28, 1972 – November 16, 1985) was a Colombian girl trapped and killed by a landslide when she was 13 years old.
Garzón was trapped under the debris of her house by a mudslide that had been caused by the eruption of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia in 1985. She spent 3 days in the water conversing with journalists who were unable to free her before she sadly died.
Whilst the pose in the artwork, and the way it is cropped may at first glance appear violent, once the backstory is known the viewer realised that the grasping hand is attempting to save her.
