"My painting practice tends to be more exacting and painstaking, and so on the rare occasion that I draw, I like to open things up a little - allow myself a modicum of mess. This small pencil study of my wife felt staid initially, so taking inspiration from Rauschenberg's erased de Kooning drawing I took to it with my rubber - before working back in a few little details to restart the heart... so to speak."
