Unclothed and bedraggled, he squatted on his haunches, savage eyed and looming like some fearsome ghost of early man, enveloping in his shadow the priest, arrested in slumber at his feet, and above his head he did hold aloft a heavy stone, and waited in this way as if for some divination to exhort him, and then without change in countenance or manner he did crack the rock down against the shadowed head, begetting a crumbled, bloodied mass, a craggy chasm of bone, herniating with gore and matter. The cleric’s limbs did kick wildly with the last drive of life, and then in death he wast once again still.
