"This hand-tufted mohair rya rug depicts Alexa Wilding, the muse of the Pre-Raphaelite artists, in Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s 1872 painting Veronica Veronese.
Although the Pre-Raphaelites explored many significant themes, such as the negative effects of industrialization and humanity’s estrangement from nature, women were often portrayed as passive and aesthetic objects lacking agency. Korolainen’s work rebelliously covers this beauty ideal with hair — historically, abundant body hair was associated with witchcraft, dirtiness, and exaggerated sexuality. Here Wilding has taken on a furry three-dimensional form, as if “growing out” of the painting, emphasizing her agency."
